BJ 체리장 - 우리나라 20대가 보여주는 현대미술

2021년 올해 에르메스 재단 미술상을 받은 작가.

모 대학 조소과에서 공부한 류성실 작가의 프로젝트 예명, BJ 체리장

말이 필요없이 일단 영상을 보고 느껴보시길 추천.

이 작가가 백남준과 같이 동영상을 미술작품으로 내놓은 것이라는 것을 모르고 보면,

도대체 이게 무슨 일인가 싶은 느낌이 듭니다.

무려 "BJ"라는 명칭을 앞세운 BJ 체리장은 위 계정에 다섯개의 영상만 올려 놓았습니다.

2019년 과로사로 사망한 BJ체리장의 장례식을 일민미술관에서 치른 영상이 마직막인가 싶더니만, 

2020년에 진짜 마지막 동영상이 올라옵니다.

이 작품들을 패러디물이나 냉소적 사회비판으로 보는 분들도 있지만, 제 의견은 좀 다릅니다.

미술이 인간사회에 작용하는 방식이 전혀 다르고, 

그 효과가 교조적이거나 교육적이거나 계몽적인 기능만을 품고 있지는 않기 때문입니다.

위 작품을 보고 갖는 느낌을 가능한 일반적으로 표현한다면, "불편하다"가 아닐까 생각합니다.

아마도 불편함의 이유는,

1. 통상의 여성 BJ가 보여줄 법하지 않은 메이크업, 이마의 장치, 인서트 화면들, 배경, 방송장비 등

2. 외모와 괴리된 말투와 목소리, 기괴한? 혹은 전형적? 어조

3. 말하는 내용의 황당함 및 기타등등의 복잡한 그러나 어이없는 느낌

에서 오는 것 같습니다.

의도적으로 미디어가 전달할 수 있는 모든 시청각 수단을 활용하여 관객에게 "불편함"을 전달한 BJ 체리장.

왜, 작가는 이런 불편함을 전달하려 했을까요?

인간은 불편함을 느끼면 그 원인을 찾으려는 본능이 있기 때문입니다.

세계대전 이전 시각적 아름다움을 추구하던 서양 미술이 지금의 현대 미술로 발전하며 겪은

가장 큰 지향점의 변화 중 하나는 이전의 미술의 부인하는 것입니다.

미술이 아름다움만을 보여주는 것이 아니라, 

추함, 부조리 등 이전 미술이 추구할 법하지 않은 것을 탐닉하여 

이전의 미술을 부정하고 새로운 방향을 모색하기 위해서요.

현대미술작가 류성실은 그의 작품을 통해 어렴풋한 "불편함" 혹은 "황당함" 혹은 "거부감"을 통해

관객, 아니 인간에게 변화를 일으킵니다.

이 변화란, �틈事습究層� 있고, 분노일수도 있으며, 행동의 발단일수도 있겠지요.

하지만, 어떤 특정한 행동이나 지식의 전달, 계몽적 경험이 목적이 아니라는 것이

패러디, 선전선동, 교육계몽적 컨텐츠와 확연히 다른 점입니다.

작품내용을 전달하는 대상도 개인만이 아닌, 집단 혹은 사회 전체일 수도 있습니다.

개인에게도 그의 감성, 지성, 이성 모두에게 미디어가 영향을 끼칠 수 있는 모든 방법으로 전달하고 있고

그 전달효과가 개개인이게 모두 다르게 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있습니다.

심지어 동일인에게도 이 작품을 보는 시간과 장소에 따라 다른 느낌을 불러일으킵니다.

선전선동과 광고가 하나의 목적을 위한 컨텐츠인 반면

예술작품은 특정한 목표가 없으며 작품감상의 반응이 자연스럽게 다양성을 띠게됩니다.

작품을 보는 관객에게 이 불편함이 어디서 오는가를 생각하게 해주는 BJ 체리장.

그리고 이 작품의 불편함을 해석하고자 

존재만으로서의 자기자신, 

집단의 일원으로서의 자기자신,

믿음의 체계를 가진 개체로서의 본인 등

실재하는 수많은 레이어에서의 개인을 스스로에게 환기시키고

또 느끼게 하는 작가입니다.

BJ Cherry Chang–The Contemporary Art Shown By Korean 20’s Artist

The 2021 award winning artist in fine art by Hermes foundation.

BJ Cherry Chang is a stage name of the artist Ryu, Soengsil majored Sculpture in Univ. Above all, you should watch one of her works on YouTube.

Probably, you must be puzzled on this footage unless she is an video artist like Peak, Namjun, the famous Korean one. BJ Cherry Chang, daring use title “BJ”, have uploaded only five footages on her YouTube account. The 2019 Footage seemed to be the last one that showed the funeral of BJ Cherry Chang died of overwork in Ilmin Gallery, but the latest footage appeared in 2020, titled “the feeling of the first-class seat travel”.

You could consider those footages to be parodies or cynical and sardonic critics on our society, yet my opinion looks different. The fine art has a different functioning ways on human society, and its influences are not just dogmatic, enlightening, and educational.

The prevailing appreciation of the work above would be, generally, “UNCOMFORTABLE”, I guess. The reasons why you felt that way are, maybe,;

1.       Unusual Makeup far from usual female BJ, the device on her fore head, insert clips on the footage, background of the footage, and unconventional broadcasting equips,

2.       The grotesque and typical voice and tone beyond her appearance. 1.        

3.       The ridiculous contents of her saying and complex but absurd feelings

Intentionally using every possible measure of sights and hearings, she had delivered discomfort to her audience. What made her deliver such a discomfort her own audience? When human-being feels uncomfortable, it is their instinct to find out the source the reluctantness and unhappiness.

             The most important changes of fine art in its development from one seeking sight for sore eyes before World Wars to the contemporary one are denying the identity of previous fine art itself. The new one has presented ugliness and absurdity which the previous one might not have indulged to search a new direction and purpose.

             The contemporary fine artist Ryu, Seongsil is making changes on her audience, even human-being through unidentified “discomfort”, “embarrassment”, and “denial” with her works. Those changes could be enlightenment, wrath, or a trigger of an action. Definitely, its purpose is not certain action or delivery of knowledge or enlightening experience not like parodies, propaganda, or educational contents.

             A Group or Society itself can be the target of delivery and influence of her work as well as individuals. In terms of individuals, her works convey its contents to their emotional, intellectual, and rational aspects through possible influential methods of the media, and the impacts on each of them make respective results. Furthemore, the same person can recognize the different feelings and influences according to the times and places on her work. The propaganda and commercials have the only purpose, on the contrary, but art works have no goals. That makes the source of diverse results naturally.

             BJ Cherry Chang who makes audience watching her works think where those discomfort comes from.

Hence, she helps and urges us to analyze and solve those uncomfortable things by; the speculation on myself as an existence, identification of myself as a member of certain communities, and a recognition of particular system of belif as an entity to arouse and divert on the numberless present layers of myself.
